The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new, generic version of Pfizer’s blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug Viagra for sale by mail order.
Viagra, the little blue pill that was launched by Pfizer in 1998, treats a man’s sexual problems. The generic version works by increasing blood flow to the penis. But it’s not approved by the FDA for that purpose.
In addition to being a generic, Viagra has been available since 1998, with more than 60 million prescriptions written for the drug from about 10,000 doctors.
The new pill is available as an injectable solution containing the active ingredient sildenafil citrate. It comes in 5 mg pills and is sold at $2.50 for the same quantity of 100 tablets. The FDA approved the pill in April, allowing the drug’s manufacturer to sell the medicine in the U. S. for as little as $3 a pill.
Viagra’s active ingredient, sildenafil, is identical to that found in the original version of the drug. But the active ingredient differs from the brand-name version of the drug, which is sold as Viagra.
Viagra is sold under the brand name Revatio and is often sold at about $2.50 for the same quantity of 100 tablets. Revatio is available in the U. at about $1.20 a pill.
The FDA has approved the generic version of the drug since it was approved by the FDA in 1998. A generic drug is not a substitute for the brand-name drug.
